I'm really glad I found this site. It got me to a couple of competitions already and I'm ready for more.
(Bowie and Conroe. I'll try to make Gilmer).

There are some incredible fiddlers in TOFTA. Children and adults alike. I am very impressed by the level of competition. You might say I went to school in my first two TOFTA events. All I can say is that school was never that much fun.

Thanks for this site!

Thanks Mark,
I'm glad you found our site. It really is amazing to see a 10 yr. old play a fiddle like they have been playing for 60 years.
It's a lot of fun to go to contest and I think if more casual fiddlers made a contest or two they would be inspired to play in fiddle contest.

Greetings from Germany - I have to admit that I am not a fiddler. I got to your site when I googled my name. Twenty years ago there was a woman with the same name who won an award. I wonder whether she is still around because it would really be fun to get into contact with her - my name is Anne Riewe!

Hello All,
I'm posting this for a friend of mine, Rob Golan, who is on his way to Dallas for work reasons over the next two weeks. Rob is an absolutely amazing Missouri style long-bow fiddle player, great on waltzs as well as East Texas Serenaders tunes (in the original keys). This isn't Texas fiddle style music, but he's a lot of fun to play with and he's wondering if there's any folks in the Dallas area who play *oldtime* (so to speak).

Let me know, Paul Mitchell, pmitchel@email.unc.edu
(that's North Carolina, FWIW).

Hello,
I'm a fiddler and a member of the Washington State Old Time Fiddler's Association. I will be visiting family in Gainesville TX between 5/26 and 6/7, and am curious if there are any contests, jams, shows, or other public events close to the Gainesville area where I could hear some Texas fiddlers. I have been playing for about 13 years and have been fortunate to have played in several different regions of the US, and have been amazed at how differently old time music is played across the country. This is my first trip to Texas and I'm really hoping to hear some Texas renditions of this great old time music.

"I see Jack was looking for a fiddle instructor in the San Antonio area."

You might try Jim Fox (mailto:jim_fox2001@msn.com) at http://jimandmaggiefox.com. Jim is (literally) a champion Irish Fiddler, but can do all fiddle styles, from Bluegrass to Western Swing and Cape Breton Old-Time. In 1986 his Celtic band won the Al-Ireland championship IN Ireland.

He specifically plays and teaches Fiddle, not Violin, though he also plays violin.

He's near Thousand Oaks and Jones- Maltzberger. I doubt if he will do group lessons, though.

I learned yesterday that the Al Amin Shriners will host the fiddle contest again here in Corpus Christi sometime during the fall/winter. It was previously held in March or April, after the winter Texans had returned to their homes in the north so attendance was very poor. Hopefully this time attendance will improve. It was a great contest with lots of talent and great prizes.

Well, here's another fiddler wanting fiddle lessons. Just started back up playing classical with a teacher 3 months ago after a 37-year hiatus. Just stumbled onto the fiddle scene by someone who told me about a contest in Crockett in June. I went to hear the wonderful music and am hooked. I attended the TOFTA camp. It was great. I live in Conroe and would like some lessons from someone reasonably close by. My e-mail is mbulfinch2@msn.com
Thanks so much.

Hi

Mike gave me permission to post his email here. You can contact him at: leonardoweise@sbcglobal.net .

He Teaches Old Time Texas Fiddle. He's been teaching for over 40 yrs. and lives in Alief.

I've been taking lessons from him for almost 4 yrs. now. I started as a total beginner. I'm still working on it but I can play lots of songs.. LOL You just may not want to listen but hey I practice as much as my schedule will allow. He's very patient as I said before.

Write him if you like. He's happy to take on more students and enjoys teaching adult students too.

Thanks for the info. for the teacher in Alief.

I need some advice about what to do for a beginner fiddle. Should I buy or rent. I don't want to spend a lot of money yet. I would appreciate if anyone has any recommendations about what kind I should look into that will be a decent fiddle but not overly expensive. It may also be better to rent for now. I am not sure. Any advice helps. Thanks.

My first violin was rented from the Lisle Violin Shop, located at:
2450 Bissonnet St, Houston, TX 77005-1422, Phone: (713) 526-4005.

I think it was about $20 a month. I had to sign an agreement but I was able to return the violin at anytime with no penalties. I found it a good enough, initial start. The rental included, the violin, bow, case and some rosin. This was a great deal too. A percentage of the rental fee applied to the purchase of an instrument from the Lisle Violin Shop. That’s a pretty good deal too.

They suggested I purchase a shoulder rest. It was about $25 and I STRONGLY recommend every student get one. Here’s an example of some: http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=11969001 The rest really makes holding the violin a lot easier, much more stable and a lot less stress on your neck.

After a year or so, I started questioning, “Was I really THAT bad or was it the violin?” Sadly, it was pretty much me, but the violin didn’t help. The G sting was very raspy sounding and over all it was just dead sounding. You’ll start to develop an ear to your instrument’s response to your playing. If was to “hear” myself getting better, I’d need a violin that had at least adequate sound and resonance.

A skilled player can make a bad instrument sound decent. But they know the difference and it’s best to defer to your teacher’s judgment, I think.

I purchased my first violin from Amati Violin Shop in West University, 2315 University Blvd. Houston, TX 77005-2641, Phone: (713) 666-6461. Amati offered a lease/purchase plan and my first violin was $800. It did not include the case, bow or any rosin. However, I’m sure they’d do a lease/purchase for the complete package.

The other part is the bow. You can get carbon fiber bows for about $100 and they work pretty darn well, especially for student players. They’re light, stiff and are easier to control than a heavier Pernambuco bow. Pernambuco is the recognized standard wood for making bows. But they can be made from many different wood and synthetic materials.

Here’s a discussion on Pernambuco vs. Carbon bows: http://www.violinist.com/discussion/response.cfm?ID=10710

As you improve you may find you prefer a heavier more responsive bow. I think I paid between $25 and $30 a month. For just the violin from Amati. My teacher was amazed how nice it sounded for a “cheap” violin. I’d already purchased a used bow from my teacher. A decent wood bow will probably be in the $450 range. But you the carbon fiber bows are still pretty nice, especially for the price. I play with a carbon fiber bow that has a Pernambuco veneer and I like it a lot.

I’ve since bought another violin. It was substantially more than the first violin but I was ready to move up to a better sounding instrument. It sounds GREAT! and when I’m playing well it really sounds sweet with a wonderful resonance.

Let me say that both Lisle and Amati have great violins and “student” grade violins. They both do excellent adjustments and repairs. If you don’t get your violin from a violin shop you may want to at least run it by them to make sure it’s “setup” correctly. There are many seemingly minor adjustments and tweaks that can make any violin sound better.

But for your initial violin, I’d suggest you go for price at first and then move up once you feel you’ve outgrown your current violin. You can also rent better violins.

I hope this helps. After a few years I’m just now getting to the point where I’m playing the notes fairly accurately. I try to practice an hour a day. Sometimes on weekends I’ll get hours of practice in. I do that in phases, not all at once. It’s frustrating as hell and it can seem like you’re never going to improve but one day you find your fingers actually moved the way you meant to and the notes start to sound sweeter.. So keep at it.

Mailed out my son's membership app 2 weeks ago--does any one know if he'll be available to play in the context in Seguin? Also, how do we find an accompanist (my son's a fiddler)?
